MINNEAPOLIS - The National Weather Service says trained weather spotters have reported at least one tornado in the Twin Cities area Sunday. Another twister or funnel cloud was picked up on metro traffic cameras near Hugo. A fatality has been reported at 26th & Penn Avenue in north Minneapolis. View Storm Photo Gallery Here. A 9 p.m. curfew has been instated by Mayor R.T. Rybak for a damaged section of north Minneapolis.
The National Weather Service reported a tornado near Highway 100 and Interstate 694 on the northwestern side of the Twin Cities. The weather service said trained weather spotters also reported a tornado near Interstate 94 and Dowling in north Minneapolis and there are numerous reports of trees down in that area.
The first storm hit the northwestern edge of the Twin Cities about 2:15 p.m. and moved northeast at about 35 mph. The weather service declared tornado warnings for large sections of the northern metro area.
The lone fatality was suffered by a person inside a minivan during the twister after a tree branch crashed into their vehicle.
Area medical centers report 30 patients as the result of an apparent tornado touchdown mid-afternoon in the North Minneapolis area. Most of the injuries have been minor in nature, though two are listed as critical.
North Memorial has opened the Family Center in the Vance DeMong Classroom as a patient waiting area and for those individuals seeking temporary shelter.
Several north Minneapolis neighborhoods, including Penn and Broadway, have homes and businesses severely damaged due to the storm. Mayor R.T. Rybak is asking people to stay clear of north Minneapolis as it is dangerous, and emergency crews need room to clear roads and continue recovery efforts. The mayor reports the worst hit areas of the city are Thomas and 23rd as well as Emerson and 34th.
As Emergency responders continue to work the scene and assist people affected by this afternoon's tornado, the City is instituting a curfew for a section of the North Side beginning at 9 p.m. Officers have saturated the area, including Hennepin County Sheriff's deputies and St. Paul police.
"Our number one concern is for the health and safety of our residents," said Rybak. "Emergency responders have been working hard on the scene, going door to door to check on the well-being of folks in this area. The Council President and I were able to view the damage from a helicopter. We don't have a full damage assessment at this time, but clearly many homes and business have had major damage."
"We know this is a very difficult situation, but we need people to help us keep these neighborhoods safe," said Police Chief Tim Dolan. "We will have extra patrols out through the night, and it's important that people in this area observe the curfew tonight-with so much damage and power outages in the area, staying inside is the best way to stay safe."
Rybak warns that residents should not sign up for storm damage repair solicitors who may be going door-to-door in the area.
Rybak has declared a Local Emergency, and the Minneapolis Emergency Operations Center is open in CIty Hall.
There are other reports of damage in Brooklyn Center, including at the Brookdale shopping center.
"No reports of any injuries or fatalities in Fridley. We do have some significant structural damage to some residential and commercial business. There is also a couple of railroad cars that have been overturned in the railroad yard at 44th Avenue and Main Street. There are many areas that have streets blocked by downed trees and there are still live power lines down in the area. Please stay out of this area while we attempt to make the area safe!," said Lt. Mike Monsrud of Fridley Police.
The Nestle plant has been evacuated because of a gas leak – all employees are being asked to leave the building.
The North Memorial Clinic - Camden Physicians in Minneapolis was damaged by the apparent tornado. The clinic will be closed until further notice. Patients with questions or concerns may call (763) 229-1204.
Xcel Energy reports many power lines are still down in the storm's path, and residents should steer clear of them. It also acknowledges power was out to 22,000 of its customers in the metro area, and the number has been decreased to 16,000 as of 9 p.m.
